Symposium on Frontiers of Life Science & the 5th Anniversary Ceremony of Life Sciences Institute, Zhejiang University Successfully Held
Symposium on Frontiers of Life Science & the 5th Anniversary Ceremony of Life Sciences Institute, Zhejiang University was successfully held in Zijingang Campus, Zhejiang University on November 12-13, 2014.
Prof. Kunsong Chen, Director of the Sci-Tech Academy of Zhejiang University, opened the ceremony at 9:00. Executive vice president of Zhejiang University Zhaohui Wu addressed the audience, accompanied by Officials of Zhejiang University, including Mr. Shaobo Ren.
At the opening ceremony Mr. Zhaohui Wu spoke highly of the achievement Life Sciences Institute (LSI for short) have made in the past five years. LSI’s Director Dr. Xin-Hua Feng gave the LSI Progress Report on LSI’s gratifying successes in terms of faculty recruitment, scientific research, graduate program, academic exchanges, etc. and introduced LSI’s future plan. Subsequently, Director Xin-Hua Feng chaired the Appointment Ceremony for LSI Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), and officially announced the list of the First SAB members. Vice Chairman of Zhejiang University Ren Shaobo presented letters of appointment to the appointed members. SAB Chairman Professor Wang Xiaofan, delivered a speech on behalf of all members, and declared that as the Chairman of the first SAB of LSI, would play an active role in guiding the Board together with other members, so as to provide assessment, academic counseling and development proposals on LSI’s strategic deployment in talent, discipline and scientific research.
About a dozen of top international scholars in the field of life science attended the meeting, including Professor Mien-Chie Hung of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a member of Academia Sinica, Taipei, Professor Jiahuai Han of Xiamen University, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Yuquan Wei of Sichuan University, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Feng Shao, Deputy Director of Beijing Institute of Biological Sciences, Professor Qimin Zhan of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Vice-Chancellor of Peking Union Medical College and a member of academic Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Yang Xu of Division of Biological Sciences, University of California-San Diego, Professor Hongkui Deng of School of Life Sciences, Peking University, etc. They made wonderful speeches on frontiers of life science and conducted a lively discussion and exchange on the front issues and development trend of this field. In addition, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, a foreign member of the US National Academy of Sciences, a member of the Royal Academy and of Academia Sinica, Taipei, the fourteenth president of the University of Hong Kong, gave a speech entitled "My View on Postgraduate Research in Biomedical Sciences".
On the morning of November 13, the first Assembly of LSI Scientific Advisory Board of twelve internationally renowned scientists in the field of life science, chaired by Chairman Professor Wang Xiaofan, met to discuss, deliberate and pass the SAB Charter, and made valuable suggestions for the Institute ‘s subsequent development.
At this point, Symposium on Frontiers of Life Science & the 5th Anniversary Ceremony of Life Sciences Institute, Zhejiang University was concluded successfully.
